Definition
YELLOW IRON OXIDE: a yellow-brown mineral,FeO.OH, crystallizing in the orthorhombicsystem. It is formed as aresult of the oxidation and hydrationof iron minerals or as a direct precipitatefrom marine or fresh water (e.g.in swamps and bogs). Most limoniteis composed largely of cryptocrystallinegoethite. Goethite is mined asan ore of iron.
