General Description
6,7-Dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline hydrochloride is also referred as heliamine. It is an alkaloid isolated from mexican cereoid,
Backebergia militaris.
Synthesis
In a 250 mL single neck flask, 3,4-dimethoxyphenethylamine (18.1 g, 100 mmol), paraformaldehyde (3.6 g, 120 mmol) and anhydrous ethanol (30 mL) were added sequentially. Upon completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and white crystals were collected by filtration to yield 14.2 g of 6,7-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline hydrochloride in 61.8% yield.
