Methylmalonic Acid (MMA) is commonly used for disease detection and its Normal values are 0.07 to 0.27 micromoles per liter. Abnormal MMA levels are common during pregnancy.Abnormal MMA levels can also be caused by kidney disease. This is usually because less MMA enters the urine, causing it to build up in your bloodstream. A deficiency of vitamin B12 may indicate higher than normal levels of MMA.
Uses
Methylmalonic Acid (MMA) is a substance produced in the body when proteins (called amino acids) are broken down. It is commonly used in testing for genetic disorders such as methylmalonic acidemia and is often performed as part of a newborn screening test. MMA testing is also commonly used to diagnose vitamin B12 deficiency.
