Uses
Sodium 4-nitrophenoxide is mainly used in the manufacture of pesticide, pharmaceutical, developer and dye intermediates, such as p-aminophenol, pesticide 1605, acetaminophen, developer mitox, etc.; the anhydrous form can be used as an organic reagent.
Production Methods
Sodium p-nitrophenolate is commercially synthesised by nitrating phenol to produce p-nitrophenol, followed by neutralization with sodium hydroxide. The production begins with electrophilic nitration of phenol, typically using a mixture of nitric and sulphuric acids, to selectively introduce a nitro group at the para position, yielding p-nitrophenol. This intermediate is then neutralised with sodium hydroxide in aqueous solution to form the sodium salt, which improves solubility and stability for agricultural formulations.
