Chemical Properties
Colorless, thick liquid with a lilac aroma. Freezing point 37°C, boiling point 219°C. Soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone, chloroform, ether, and benzene, but insoluble in water. Human oral LD50:3-4 g/kg, rat oral LD50:4.3 g/kg, ADI 1 mg/kg (CE).
Uses
Terpineol is a permitted food flavoring agent according to GB 2760-1996 standard. It is mainly used to formulate flavorings for citrus fruits such as lemon and lemonade, as well as sweet orange, strawberry, peach, cherry, and raspberry. The dosage, based on normal production needs, is generally 40 mg/kg in chewing gum, 38 mg/kg in seasonings, 19 mg/kg in baked goods, 16 mg/kg in frozen drinks, 14 mg/kg in candy, 12-16 mg/kg in puddings, and 5.4 mg/kg in soft drinks.
