• Synthesis

  There are two main methods for the synthesis of D(-)Prolinol: (1) indirect reduction method: using D-proline as raw material, esterification and neutralization are performed, followed by reduction with NaBH4; (2) direct reduction method: D-proline is directly reduced with AlLiH4. The former is cumbersome and has a low yield (42.6%); the latter is demanding, requiring low-temperature ice bath addition, resulting in high cost and a dark product color. The authors used a reduction system of NaBH4 with added auxiliary I2 to directly reduce D-proline to D-proline (see figure below), which is low-cost, of good quality, stable, easy to operate, and readily industrialized.
