General Description
4-(Trifluoromethoxy)benzoyl chloride (4-(Trifluoromethoxy)-1-benzenecarbonyl chloride, 4-(Chlorocarbonyl)-α,α,α-trifluoroanisole, 4-(Chloroformyl)-α,α,α-trifluoroanisole) is a clear, colorless liquid. It is an organic building block. Its density and refractive index values have been reported.
Synthesis
A) General procedure for the synthesis of 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzoyl chloride from 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzoic acid: 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzoic acid (25.0 g) was suspended in toluene (300 mL) at room temperature, followed by the addition of thionyl chloride (17.3 g). N,N-dimethylacetamide (1 mL) was added to the reaction mixture as a catalyst and the mixture was stirred at 60 °C for 2 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by distillation under reduced pressure to afford the target product 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzoyl chloride (25.1 g). The product was characterized by 1H NMR (300 MHz, DMSO-d6) with chemical shifts of δ 7.39-7.52 (2H, m) and 8.01-8.11 (2H, m).
