This 37-residue pancreatic β-cell hormone (MW = 3.9 kDa; Sequence: KCNTATCATQRLANFLVHSSNNFGAILSSTNVGSNTY), also called Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP), is co-secreted with insulin and plays a role in glycemic regulation by retarding gastric emptying and promoting satiety. Amylin helps to prevent post-prandial spikes in blood glucose. Amylin potently inhibits (EC50 = 18 pM) amino acid-stimulated glucagon secretion.
