What is Methoxypolyethylene glycols?
Methoxypolyethylene glycols (mPEG) are addition polymers of ethylene oxide and methanol with the molecular formula CH3O-(CH2-CH2-O)n-H and average molecular weights in the range of 350 to 5000. All mPEGs are represented by a number indicating the average molecular weight. mPEG 350 and 500 are clear viscous liquids at room temperature, but mPEG 750 and 1000 require temperatures above 40°C. mPEG 2000, 3000 and 5000 are supplied as waxy white solids in sheet form. mPEG series are miscible with water. mPEG 350 and 500 are clear viscous liquids at room temperature, but mPEG 750 and 1000 require temperatures above 40°C. mPEG 2000, 3000, and 5000 are white, waxy solids supplied as flakes. mPEG products are miscible with water, with the solid mPEGs being slightly less soluble in water, and their solubility decreasing with increasing molecular weight. mPEG products are also soluble in aliphatic ketones, alcohols, Glycol ethers, esters and aromatic hydrocarbons and other non-polar solvents. They are highly soluble, lubricating, hygroscopic and have high hydrophobic solvent properties. Methoxypolyethylene glycols are used as soaps and detergents, adhesives, chemical intermediates, ink and dye carriers, lubricants and plasticisers.
