What can Magnesium Permanganate be Used for in Daily Life?

Mar 26,2024

Magnesium permanganate is used as a chemical to test for the presence of carbon dioxide in a solution. For example, if your lab partner adds yeast extract to a tube of water and boils it for a long time, you can use magnesium permanganate to detect the presence of carbon dioxide in the solution. In addition, there are also some uses of magnesium permanganate that can make your life easier.

Pottery Making

Potters use magnesium permanganate when making their pieces because it prevents the clay pieces from molding during drying. The green tint left after the clay is poured helps prevent mold as it contains chromium and magnesium ions that won't allow bacteria to multiply.

Cleaning Windows

If you want to clean your windows, you can use magnesium permanganate and baking soda or sodium carbonate to safely remove anything stuck on them, such as nicotine and beer stains. You can also use it to make a green cleaner for your home to remove many stains from carpets and upholstery.

Prevent Iron from Rusting

If you want to prevent iron from rusting, make a magnesium permanganate solution using two cups of water and some salt. The solution can be applied to iron pieces with a sponge or cloth to prevent them from rusting. You can also use magnesium permanganate to remove existing rust from your iron. It mixes the chemical with hot water while stirring well, lets it sit for about an hour, and then washes it off with warm water.

Detergent Alternatives

In baking, you can use magnesium permanganate as a detergent alternative when washing dishes or making soap. This is because it does not harm the taste of baked goods.

Prevent Corrosion

If your copper or brass object has corroded, you can use magnesium permanganate as a disinfectant to prevent it from corroding further. Likewise, if you have any items made of iron that cannot rust, you can use this chemical to prevent them from corroding by making a solution with water and applying it to the item with a cloth.
