Tannic Acid: A Potent Natural Compound for Anti-Inflammatory and Neuroprotective Effects
Tannic acid is a polyphenolic compound. It is a type of the commercially available tannins. It acts as a weak acid. Tannic acid is found in the nutgalls formed by insects on the twigs of certain oak trees. It is removed and used as medicine. In the old days it was used as antidote against different poisons.
Uses
Nowadays, tannic acid is applied topically for the treatment of cold sores, diaper rash, fever blisters and poison ivy.
Tannic acid is also taken by mouth and applied directly for bleeding, chronic diarrhea, dysentery, bloody urine, painful joints, persistent coughs, and cancer.
In foods and beverages, tannic acid is used as a flavoring agent.
Tannic acid is used as a fixative of dyes and as a chemical intermediate and reagent in the manufacture of inks, rubber, and imitation horns and tortoise shells. It is also used to clarify beer and wine, in photography, as a chemical reagent in analytical laboratories, and in pharmaceutical preparations.
Effect
Studies have shown that TA displays a wide range of pharmacological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, antitumor, cardioprotective, and anti-pathogenic effects.
Tannic acid and propyl gallate, but not gallic acid, were inhibitory to foodborne bacteria, aquatic bacteria, and off-flavor-producing microorganisms. Their antimicrobial properties seemed to be associated with the hydrolysis of ester linkage between gallic acid and polyols hydrolyzed after ripening of many edible fruits. Tannins in these fruits thus serve as a natural defense mechanism against microbial infections. The antimicrobial property of tannic acid can also be used in food processing to increase the shelf-life of certain foods, such as catfish fillets. Tannins have also been reported to exert other physiological effects, such as to accelerate blood clotting, reduce blood pressure, decrease the serum lipid level, produce liver necrosis, and modulate immunoresponses.
