Is it safe to use Ethylhexylglycerin

Jul 3,2024

Introduction

Ethylhexylglycerin (EHG, 3-[2-(Ethylhexyl)oxyl]-1,2-propandiol), a 1-alkyl glyceryl ether, is a multifunctional additive for cosmetics and is used as a potentiating agent in combination with PE to obtain better protection against microbial growth.

A synergistic effect between 2-phenoxyethanol (PE) and EHG on the viability of various microorganisms has been reported, both in laboratory tests and in cosmetic products. It has been suggested that the potentiation effect is due to the surfactant properties of EHG, affecting the surface tension properties of bacteria and improving the contact between PE and the membrane. Thus, the effect of the combination of PE and EHG is well established regarding antimicrobial protection of, e.g. cosmetics, but the mechanism of action behind the synergistic effect is unknown[1].

Skincare, Hair care, and Cosmetic product

The chemical formula of Ethylhexylglycerin is C11H24O3. It is used in various products, such as lipsticks, moisturizers, foundations, shampoos, fragrances, and more. It is a skin-softening agent that offers multiple benefits for skin care and cosmetic products. It acts as a humectant and hydrates skin and hair deeply without leaving them heavy or sticky. Ethylhexylglycerin is also a preservative that increases the shelf life of various products. It leaves the skin and hair smoother and softer while hydrating them. Ethylhexylglycerin is thus popular in various cosmetic, skincare and hair care products.

Skincare: It has skin conditioning properties that hydrate and lubricate the surface. It also draws moisture to the upper layers of the skin and locks it there for deeper hydration.

Hair care conditions the hair and cleans the scalp while acting as a preservative for hair care products. This ingredient prevents bacterial growth in formulations and increases the shelf life of products.

Cosmetic products: It stabilizes the formulations by keeping them blended. Cosmetic products last longer because of the presence of Ethylhexylglycerin.

Safety

Ethylhexylglycerin is not safe due to its performance as a contact allergen. People with sensitive skin and an existing skin condition are more likely to be impacted by products containing this ingredient. However, anyone can be exposed to dermatitis and skin irritation due to ethylhexylglycerin.

Some common health effects are Dermatitis and Skin irritation.

This ingredient has also been called out for increasing the effectiveness of phenoxyethanol, which is a preservative we suggest avoiding.
