Does soy contain S-equol?
Dec 6,2024
No. S-equol is not found in soybeans, but is produced naturally in the gut of some people (particularly Asians) through bacterial biotransformation of the soy isoflavone daidzein. In intervention studies that determined plasma S-equol levels, concentrations >5-10 ng/mL were associated with positive outcomes for vasomotor symptoms, osteoporosis (measured as increased bone mineral density), prostate cancer, and the cardiovascular risk biomarkers LDL cholesterol and C-reactive protein. These studies suggest that S-equol may provide therapeutic benefits for a variety of medical needs.
