Applications as catalyst
Application in the polymerization of styrene monomer
Bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride is a catalyst that has found application in the polymerization of styrene monomer. In this particular study, heterogeneous nanoparticle supported Bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichlorid catalysts are synthesized and used for the polymerization of styrene. To support the catalyst, nanoparticles NA-MgO-MAO and NA-TiO2-MAO are employed. The supporting process is confirmed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FTIR. The resulting polymer is characterized using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), 13C NMR spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The use of nanoparticle supported Bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride catalysts leads to the production of syndiotactic styrene polymer with higher yields and improved properties such as high Mn (number-average molecular weight) and Mw (weight-average molecular weight) as well as a narrow molecular weight distribution. These catalysts exhibit better performance compared to other supported zirconocene catalysts. Furthermore, the heterogeneous catalysts can be reused for multiple cycles, indicating their potential for cost-effective and sustainable polymerization processes. Ongoing experiments are also being conducted to explore the application of Bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride catalysts in the polymerization of ethylene. In summary, the nanoparticle supported bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride catalysts offer a promising approach for the polymerization of styrene monomer, providing improved yields and desirable polymer characteristics. 2
Applications in the homogeneous catalysis
Bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride, is a key component in the homogeneous catalysis of ethylene polymerization. In the context of ambient ionization mass spectrometry, droplet spray ionization from a glass microscope slide allows for real-time monitoring of this chemical reaction. By applying a sample solution containing Cp2ZrCl2/MAO onto a microscope cover glass and subjecting it to a high voltage, a stable stream of charged droplets is generated without contamination from the substrate platform. This method enables in situ analysis of the catalytic process, with reaction times ranging from seconds to minutes. Through tandem mass spectrometry, catalytically active species and polymeric products of ethylene can be identified, showcasing the utility of Bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride in enabling efficient and accurate monitoring of ethylene polymerization reactions in various solutions. 3
