Uses of Nickel Monoxide
Nickel monoxide (synonyms: Nickel(II) oxide, Nickel protoxide or Green nickel oxide) is a green to black colored, inorganic compound with the formula NiO. About 4000 tons of chemical grade nickel monoxide are produced annually, while the mineralogical form of NiO, bunsenite, is very rare. NiO can be prepared by heating nickel powder with oxygen above 400 °C. Other preparation methods include heating a mixture of nickel power and water at 1000 °C, or through pyrolysis of a nickel(II) compounds such as the hydroxide, nitrate, and carbonate.
Nickel Monoxide has various applications in the electronics, ceramics, steel and alloy industries. It is used in the ceramic industry to make frits, ferrites, and porcelain glazes. The sintered oxide is used to produce nickel steel alloys. NiO is also a component in the nickel-iron battery and is a component in fuel cells. It is the precursor to many nickel salts, for use as specialty chemicals and catalysts. Other applications can be found in electronic circuit boards, magnetic materials, green pigment ceramics, and porcelains.
Long-term exposure to NiO can cause severe dermatitis, skin and asthma-like allergies and damages the lungs, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract and neurological system. Nickel monoxide is a known carcinogen and is associated with an increased risk of developing lung and nasal cancers.
