Introduction to sodium bis (trimethylsilyl) amino
Sodium di (trimethylsilyl) amino is a chemical with the molecular formula ((CH3)3Si)2NNa. This class of substances, commonly called NaHMDS (sodium hexamethyldisilane diazonium), is a strong base that is often used for deprotonation in reactions or as a catalyst in alkaline reactions. The advantage of this compound is that it can be a solid reagent and soluble in a wide range of aprotic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran, ether, benzene or toluene, and has a very strong alkali but poor nucleophilicity due to the presence of two large and lipophilic trimethylsilyl (TMS) groups within the molecule, which affects its participation in nucleophilic substitution reactions. NaHMDS deteriorates rapidly in water, forming sodium hydroxide and hexamethyldisilazane.
