Guaiacol is widely used in industry. Guaiacol is often used to produce various spices, such as eugenol, vanillin and artificial musk. Guaiacol is also widely used in medicine. It can be used to synthesize guaiacol benzene sulfonate (potassium guaiacol sulfonate), as a local anesthetic or preservative, expectorant and treat dyspepsia. Because of its reducibility, it is often added as an antioxidant in a small amount in cosmetics, and often used together with synergists and metal ion chelating agents. Guaiacol is also used as a dye because it reacts dark with oxygen. Guaiacol is also used as raw material for organic synthesis and reference material for analysis and determination.
