Doxycycline hydrochloride is a semi-synthetic tetracycline antibiotic that penetrates cell membranes to bind to the 30S ribosomal subunit, interfering with tRNA/mRNA interactions and ultimately inhibiting protein synthesis. As a broad-spectrum antibiotic and antibacterial agent, this antibiotic is very resistant mainly to bacteria causing respiratory infections including Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. It also treats infections caused by Chlamydia, Rickettsia and certain spirochetes and has anti-protozoal and anthelmintic properties.
