Production Process
Disodium phosphate is manufactured through the neutralization reaction of phosphoric acid with sodium carbonate or sodium hydroxide, followed by crystallization and drying:
Reaction:
H₃PO₄ + Na₂CO₃ → Na₂HPO₄ + CO₂ + H₂O
or
H₃PO₄ + 2NaOH → Na₂HPO₄ + 2H₂O
Crystallization: Cooling and controlled crystallization for dihydrate or dodecahydrate forms.
Drying: To obtain anhydrous form by heat treatment.
Purification & Quality Control
Mechanism of Action
Disodium phosphate acts as a pH buffer, emulsifier, chelating agent, and reactive intermediate. It maintains the alkalinity of a solution and regulates acidity in foods or chemical reactions. In water treatment, it softens water by binding to calcium and magnesium ions.
Applications
● Food Industry (E339(ii)):
Buffering agent in cheese, milk, beverages
Emulsifier in processed meats
Preservative and pH control in baked goods and sauces
● Detergent Industry:
● Water Treatment:
● Textile and Dyeing:
Water conditioning
Dye fixation aid
● Pharmaceuticals and Nutraceuticals:
● Ceramics & Electroplating:
Electrolyte additive
Flux agent
