Clarithromycin Overview
Definition:
Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, thereby preventing bacterial growth and replication.
Function:
Clarithromycin is effective against a wide range of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including some atypical pathogens. It has a broader spectrum compared to other macrolides, making it useful in treating a variety of infections.
Applications:
· Respiratory infections: Treats conditions like pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
· Helicobacter pylori eradication: Used in combination therapy to treat H. pylori infections associated with peptic ulcers.
· Skin and soft tissue infections: Effective for treating cellulitis, impetigo, and other skin infections.
· Ear infections: Used for treating otitis media.
· Other infections: Clarithromycin is also effective in treating pharyngitis, tonsillitis, and certain atypical infections like Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in immunocompromised patients.
