Benzyl alcohol has an anesthetic effect, has a strong irritating effect on the eyes, skin and respiratory system, and is harmful if swallowed, inhaled or in contact with the skin. After ingestion, it causes headache, nausea, vomiting, gastrointestinal irritation, convulsion, coma, and in severe cases, death. The median lethal dose in rats was 1230mg/kg. After entering the body, benzyl alcohol is first oxidized to benzoic acid, and then condensed with glycine in the liver, and excreted as hippuric acid. The use of benzyl alcohol as a solvent by intramuscular injection may result in gluteal contracture.
