Hexafluoroisopropyl alcohol (HFIP) is a thick, colourless liquid with a pungent smell. It is an ideal solvent for dissolving polyamides and esters and can be used to analyze nylon. Typically, a small amount of sodium trifluoroacetate can be added to the eluent to reduce sample aggregation. Although HFIP has a certain viscosity, it has a low boiling point and usually requires Chemicalbook analysis at 40°C to reduce the back pressure of the column. Hexafluoroisopropyl alcohol is also a highly polar solvent, which can make the correction curve obtained from the mixed bed column nonlinear. Agilent has therefore developed a special column for this solvent, the PLHFIPgel column, which has a porous structure that is not affected by the solvent.
