Usage:
Amitriptyline Hydrochloride is an antidepressant with anticholinergic and sedative properties. It appears to prevent the re-uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin at nerve terminals, thus potentiating the action of these neurotransmitters. Amitriptyline also appears to antagonize cholinergic and alpha-1 adrenergic responses to bioactive amines.
Amitriptyline is used in ankylosing spondylitis for pain relief as a preventive for patients with frequent/chronic migraines. It is also used as a preventive for patients with recurring biliary dyskinesia (sphincter of Oddi dysfunction) Amitriptyline is also used in the treatment of nocturnal enuresis in children.
