Cholesterol-d6 has been used in safe procedures to measure the percentage of cholesterol absorption, based on that of D. B. Zilversmit (1972), by using Cholesterol-d6 as a stable nonradioactive isotopic tracer of cholesterol that was administered orally into normal individuals to facilitate clinical investigation.
Cholesterol-d6 rich liposomes are used in understanding the kinetics of reverse cholesterol transport in lymphatic and aorta. It is used in the generation of stratum corneum (SC) lipid model systems for deuteration based neutron diffraction studies. Use of Cholesterol-d6 as a diet supplement has enabled the understanding cholesterol metabolism in the blood brain barrier.
