This substance is a deep red powder. It is easily soluble in water, forming a bluish-red solution with yellow fluorescence. When sodium hydroxide solution is added, it also appears bluish-red. Additionally, it is soluble in ethanol. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it turns orange-yellow and red after dilution.
Sulforhodamine B sodium salt has been used:
-
for relative total cell mass quantification
-
to investigate the viscosity of coacervates
-
as a molecular rotor for microviscosity determination in aerosol droplets
Sulforhodamine B Sodium Salt is a rhodamine dye widely used in nonpermanent tattoos. Studies show that Sulforhodamine B can be used as a potential new therapeutic agent for the treatment of the acute respiratory distress syndrome. Dyes and metabolites, Environmental Testing
Sulforhodamine B (SRB) is known for use in SRB assay for the determination of in vitro cytotoxicity through staining and the observation of live cells, proliferation and drug screening.
It has been used in the SRB assay to evaluate the effect of mouthwashes on protein content in primary cultures of human fibroblasts.
It is also suitable as a microscopic tracer for the assessment of blood-brain barrier integrity by post mortem inspection of frozen sections. SRB is useful as a caries detector dye with subsequent inspection of histological material.
ChEBI: Sulforhodamine B is an organic sodium salt having 4-[3,6-bis(diethylamino)-2,7-dimethylxanthenium-9-yl]benzene-1,3-disulfonate as the counterion.
4-Formylbenzene-1,3-disulfonic acid and 3-(Diethylamino)phenol condensation, the products with sulfuric acid dehydration, and ferric chloride oxidation, and finally into sodium salt.
Sulforhodamine B (SRB) is a bright-pink aminoxanthene dye. The sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay is extensively used for in vitro cytotoxicity screening. SRB binds to the protein constituents of the cells in a stoichiometric manner. Thus, the amount of dye extracted from stained cells is directly proportional to the cell mass. SRB can also be used for cell density determination.

Sulforhodamine B sodium salt is useful to measure cell biomass and also for cytotoxicity screening.
Properties and Applications
bright blue light pink. Dark red light brown powder. Soluble in water, in blue light red, with fluorescence, also soluble in alcohol. The strong sulfuric acid dyes is orange, diluted for red, with sodium hydroxide solution is blue light red. Mainly used for wool, silk and polyamide fiber dyeing, also can be used for wool and a variety of fabric dyeing, still can be in wool and silk fabric printing directly, also can used for leather dyeing.
