Kelevan is commercially produced through a multi-step synthesis involving the esterification of a decachlorinated polycyclic alcohol with levulinic acid or its ethyl ester. The key intermediate is a decachlorooctahydro-2-hydroxy-1,3,4-metheno-cyclobuta[cd]pentalene structure, which is reacted with ethyl levulinate under controlled conditions to form the final product.
