Thymosin alpha(11) is an immunomodulatory peptide isolated from bovine thymosin. Its structure is based on thymosin α₁, with an additional seven amino acids at the carboxy-terminus. The sequence of this peptide is: AcSer-Asp-Ala-Ala-Val-Asp-Thr-Ser-Ser-Glu-Ile-Thr-Thr-Lys-Asp-Leu-Lys-Glu-Lys-Lys-Glu-Val-Val-Glu-Glu-Ala-Glu-Asn-Gly-Arg-Glu-Ala-Pro-Ala-AsnOH[1].
Thymosin alpha(11) significantly enhances the resistance of susceptible mice to infection by the opportunistic pathogen Candida albicans and is effective at extremely low doses (less than 300 ng). Its potency is approximately 30 times that of thymosin fragment 5 and is roughly equivalent to that of thymosin α₁. The most effective dose is 160–320 ng per mouse per day[1].
