Europium(III) acetate hydrate is used as a phosphor activator, color cathode-ray tubes and liquid-crystal displays used in computer monitors and televisions employ Europium Oxide as the red phosphor; no substitute is known. Europium Acetate is also applied in speciality glass for laser material. Excitation of the Europium atom by absorption of ultra violet radiation can result in specific energy level transitions within the atom creating an emission of visible radiation.
white crystals or crystalline powder
Europium(III) acetate hydrate is used as fluorescent powder and as a chemical reagent.
core: europium
reagent type: catalyst
Recrystallise it several times from water [Ganapathy et al. J Am Chem Soc 108 3159 1986]. [Beilstein 2 II 119.] For europium shift reagents see lanthanide shift reagents in “Aliphatic Compounds”, Chapter 4.
