Potassium hydroxide (4.94 g, 88 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of imidazole (3.0 g, 44 mmol) in 100 mL of dichloromethane. The reaction mixture was refluxed at 50 °C for 12 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by decantation and the volatiles were removed by rotary evaporation to give the crude product of 1,1-methylenebis(imidazole). The crude product was washed with ether and dried to give a white solid. The final product was bis(1H-imidazol-1-yl)methane in the form of a white powder with a yield of 3.82 g in 60% yield.
