colorless, very volatile, oily liquid; explodes violently upon concussion or when in contact with iodine or a flame; preparation: dehydration of HClO4 with phosphorus pentoxide; uses: catalyst [KIR78] [MER06]
Cl2O7 is also known as dichlorine heptoxide. It is obtained as a colorless oily liquid by dehydration of perchloric acid using a strong dehydrating agent such as phosphorus pentoxide, P2O5.
Catalyst in cellulose esterification.
An explosive sensitive to impact or rapid heating. Explodes on contact with iodine. Mixtures with bromine pentafluoride are shock-sensitive explosives. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of Clí. See also PERCHLORATES
