Monopotassium phosphite is a white, hygroscopic phosphite salt. It is soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol and is slowly oxidized by air to phosphate.
Monopotassium phosphite can be used as a fungicide and as a chelating agent for calcium and magnesium ions. It can also serve as a substitute for organophosphorus-based water-treatment agents, thereby reducing environmental pollution.
Potassium dihydrogen phosphite is synthesised by the reaction of phosphorous acid with potassium hydroxide.
