2-Methoxyethyl methacrylate is a monomer that can be used to prepare poly(2-methoxyethyl methacrylate) (PMEMA) polymers. When PMEMA polymers undergo thermal decomposition at temperatures up to 500°C, two different reactions occur. The primary reaction is depolymerisation, where the only product is the monomer. The secondary reaction is esterolysis, which produces very small amounts of volatile products including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, ethylene, isobutylene, methyl vinyl ether, methanol and formaldehyde.
