The commercial production route of ethiolate is not documented in open literature. However, based on its chemical identity its commercial synthesis would have followed the same well established thiocarbamate route used for related herbicides: reacting diethylamine with carbon disulphide to form the corresponding diethyl dithiocarbamate salt, then alkylating this intermediate with ethyl halide (typically ethyl chloride or ethyl bromide) to yield the S-ethyl thiocarbamate ester.
