9.77 g of AlCl3 was suspended in 50 ml of dichloromethane and then 5 g of ethylchlorooxoacetate was added dropwise at -20C and under nitrogen. Then 6.09 g of 2-thiophene was added dropwise at -20C with stirring. After stirring for 1h, the reaction mixture was decanted in ice-water and the compound 2-thiophene ethyl acetate was extracted using ethyl acetate. The product was purified by column chromatography.
