Chemical Properties
clear colorless liquid
Uses
2-Methoxypropene is used in the synthesis of Macrolactin A, a 24-member macrolide typically employed as an antibiotic. Also used in the synthesis of phenylalanine derivatives used as α4β1 and α4β7 receptor antagonists in the treatment of allergic asthma.
Preparation
2-Methoxypropene is prepared in high yield from Succinic Anhydride, 2,2-Dimethoxypropane, benzoic acid, and Pyridine.
Reactivity Profile
2-Methoxypropene is an electron-rich alkene used in the monoprotection of aliphatic, allylic, and propargylic alcohols, often followed by Claisen or other rearrangements; protection of peroxides, cyanohydrins, α-hydroxy ketones, and phenols; condensation with amines; protection of 1,2- and 1,3-diols, sometimes followed by Prins rearrangements; protection of 1,2-dithiols and α-hydroxy carbamates; participant in pericyclic reactions; formation of 2-methoxyallyl halides and substituted furans.
Toxics Screening Level
The initial threshold screening level (ITSL) for 2-Methoxy-1-propene is 6 μg/m3 based on an annual averaging time.
Precautions
flammable liquid; light-sensitive; should be refrigerated.
