Chemical Properties
Fine, water-soluble powder available as
both straight-chain and cross-linked polymers in
a variety of molecular weights. May be in form
of free acid, sodium, or amide-ammonium salts.
Reacts readily with alcohols and amines.
Uses
Bond aid for polar to nonpolar substances. Compatibilizer for polymer blends.
Uses
Viscosity modifier for solution, suspension or emulsion. Dispersing aid for insoluble solids.
Hazard
Low toxicity by ingestion and skin contact.
A mild eye irritant.
Toxics Screening Level
The ITSL for maleic anhydride is based on 1% of the Threshold
Limit Value (TLV) of 0.01 mg/m3; to protect for the potential effects of respiratory irritation
(ACGIH, 2011).
