Description
Trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) is a colorless crystalline compound that dissolves in water and polar solvents but remains insoluble in nonpolar solutions. It is a crucial cross-linking agent in the formulation of polymers, resins, and coatings and is used as a photoinitiator for UV-reactive coatings and inks. Additionally, Trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) acts as a chelating agent in the treatment of heavy metal toxicity, and it is used to modify high internal phase emulsions to extract heavy metals from water.
Chemical Properties
Colorless to light yellow liquid
Uses
Trimethylolpropane tris(3-Mercaptopropanoate) can be used to prepare UV curing environmentally friendly nail polish.
Uses
Trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) may be used in the following studies:
- Preparation of hydrogels, via crosslinking inulin derivatives.
- Construction of porous hybrid monolithic materials.
- As monomer for the preparation of a new thiol-ene based polymeric fluorescence sensor, via photo initiated polymerization.
General Description
Trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate) is reported as a multi-thiol crosslinking reagent.
Synthesis
Sequentially adding cyclohexane, trimethylolpropane, 3-mercaptopropionic acid, and p-toluenesulfonic acid into a reaction container and reacting in an oil bath; washing the product by adopting heating reflux and cooling; drying to obtain a crude product; and finally, performing reduced pressure distillation and filtration, thereby obtaining trimethylolpropane tris(3-mercaptopropionate).
