Chemical Properties
Light Tan Solid
Uses
antiarrhythmic, cardiotonic, hypertensive, Na/K ATPase inhibitor
Uses
Melengestrol Acetate is an orally active progestational steroid. Progestogen; growth promotant.
Definition
ChEBI: Melengestrol acetate is a corticosteroid hormone.
Safety Profile
An experimental
teratogen. Experimental reproductive
effects. When heated to decomposition it
yields acrid smoke and irritating fumes.
Synthesis
U.S. Patent 3,359,287 discusses the preparation of melengestrol acetate by dehydrogenating 17α-hydroxy-6α-methyl-16-methylenepregn-4-en-3,20-dione-17-acetate with chloroquinone. U.S. Patent 4,154,748 discusses an interchangeable method in which melengestrol acetate is prepared by a method comprising acetylation of 17α-hydroxy-6-methyl-16-methylenepregn-4,6-diene-3,20-dione.
Toxics Screening Level
The initial threshold screening level (ITSL) for melengesterol acetate is 2 μg/m3 based on an annual averaging time.
