Chemical Properties
Colorless, transparent crystals or white
granular powder; odorless; astringent metallic taste.
Effloresces in air, turns pink on exposure to air and
light. Loseswater of crystallization at 120C; soluble
in water and alcohol.
Uses
Insecticide, medicine (antiseptic).
General Description
A colorless to white crystalline solid which turns pink on exposure to air. The primary is the threat to the environment. Immediate steps should be taken to limit its spread to the environment. ZINC PHENOLSULFONATE is soluble in water. ZINC PHENOLSULFONATE is used as an insecticide and in medicine.
Air & Water Reactions
Soluble in water. Turns pink on exposure to air.
Reactivity Profile
ZINC PHENOLSULFONATE behaves as a weak acid in solution. Therefore, ZINC PHENOLSULFONATE would react with bases in neutralization reactions that would generate heat.
Health Hazard
Inhalation of dust may irritate nose and throat. Ingestion of large doses has emetic and astringent effects; can cause irritation or corrosion of the alimentary tract. Contact with eyes causes irritation. Contact with skin causes mild irritation.
Fire Hazard
Special Hazards of Combustion Products: Irritating oxides of sulfur may form in fires.
Purification Methods
It crystallises from warm water by cooling to 0o. It effloresces in dry air. It loses all its H2O at 120o. Its solubility in H2O is 63% at 20o and 250% at boiling point, and in EtOH it is 55% at 50o. [Beilstein 11 H 53, 11 I 234, 11 IV 574.]
