Ethylmethylamine, or N-methylethanamine, is a clear colorless to light yellow liquid with the chemical formula C3H9N. It is corrosive and highly flammable.
Uses
N-Ethylmethylamine has been used in the synthesis of N-ethyl-methyl acrylamide via reaction with acryloyl chloride.
General Description
Ethyl methylamine is part of a group of substances called dialkyl amines. Dialkylamines can be described as organic substances with the dialkylamine group and are which is distinguished by two alkyl groups joined to the amino nitrogen. Ethylmethylamine is insoluble (in the water) and is a very solid base chemical (based upon the pKa). Ethyl-methyl amine is found in many foods, including wild carrots, corn, and cabbage as well as carrots, making the compound of ethylmethylamine a biomarker for the consumption of these foods.
Synthesis
(1) Preparation of formyl ethylamine: Add 7.5L of methyl formate to the reactor and cool to about 0C. Maintain less than 10 dropwise addition of 650 g of ethylamine. After dropwise addition, slowly heat to reflux reaction for 4 hours. The reaction was completed and the reaction solution was concentrated. Add toluene and concentrate under reduced pressure 250mL x 3 times each time to obtain a light yellow oil. Equimolar yield. .
(2) Preparation of formyl ethylamine: 100g of formyl ethylamine, 1L of tetrahydrofuran and 200g of lithium aluminum hydride prepared according to the above method were added to the reaction kettle. The reaction was heated to reflux for 10 hours. After the reaction, add 500mL of concentrated hydrochloric acid and stir the reaction for 12 hours. Add sodium hydroxide solid heating distillation to adjust the pH to alkaline, add distillation column distillation at atmospheric pressure. Collected 34 ~ 40 fraction, obtained 24.3 g colorless oil, yield 30%.
