Chemical Properties
4,40 -Diphenoxydiphenyl ketone, mp 148℃, bp 270℃, is a colorless solid, that is insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents.
Uses
4,4' -Diphenoxybenzophenone is used exclusively for the production of highperformance plastics, e.g., by Friedel – Crafts reaction with aromatic dicarboxylic acid chlorides, such as terephthalic acid dichloride. The plastics display a series of industrially interesting properties, such as long-term heat resistance up to 270℃, fire-extinguishing properties, and high chemical- and solvent resistance. The polymer is worked by injection molding or spinning.
Preparation
4,4' -Diphenoxydiphenyl ketone is produced from diphenyl ether and phosgene in the presence of aluminum chloride as catalyst. It may also be prepared by the catalyzed atmospheric oxidation of 4,40 -diphenoxydiphenylmethane or the reaction of diphenyl ether, tetrachloromethane, and aluminum chloride.
