Uses
δ-Carotene is an antioxidant β-carotene (C184250) found in many plants such as in sea buckthorn, maize, and flower petals.
Purification Methods
δ-Carotene crystallises from CS2/hexane/EtOH as red needles. The racemic carotene is purified through an alumina (Grade II) column by elution with 15% *C6H6/pet ether (b 60-80o), and the main band eluent is evaporated and the residue is crystallised from MeOH/pet ether (b 60-80o) to give -carotene with m 150-151o.
