Production Methods
Commercial manufacture of disul was historically tied to its role as a precursor in the synthesis of the herbicide 2,4 D. Industrial production involved reacting 2,4 dichlorophenoxyethanol with sulfuric acid to form the corresponding hydrogen sulphate ester, yielding disul as a solid intermediate suitable for formulation or further conversion. To produce disul sodium, manufacturers neutralised this hydrogen sulphate ester with sodium hydroxide, generating the water soluble sodium salt

Hazard
Gastrointestinal irritant. Questionable car-
cinogen.
Mechanism of action
Not itself phytotoxic but is rapidly converted to 2,4-D which is synthetic auxin
Potential Exposure
Used as corrosion inhibitor, pharma-
ceutical intermediate and emulsifier. A potential danger
to those involved in manufacture, formulation and applica-
tion of this herbicide as well as citizens in the area of
application.
First aid
If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove anycontact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least15 min, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts theskin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediatelywith soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately.If this chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure,begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR ifheart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medicalfacility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and inducevomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit.

Incompatibilities
Incompatible with oxidizers (chlorates,
nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine,
bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explo-
sions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases,
strong acids, oxoacids, and epoxides.
Waste Disposal
Sesone is hydrolyzed by
alkali to NaHSO4 and apparently dichlorophenoxyethanol.
In accordance with 40CFR165, follow recommendations
for the disposal of pesticides and pesticide containers. Must
be disposed properly by following package label directions
or by contacting your local or federal environmental control
agency, or by contacting your regional EPA office.
