Chemical Properties
White flake or needle crystal. Melting point 82-93℃, insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether and chloroform. It is flammable and has the properties of acids and alcohols, and it is easy to lose hydroxyl groups at high temperatures.
Uses
DL-12-Hydroxystearic acid can be used to formulate anti-rust grease, also used as organic intermediate.
Definition
ChEBI: 12-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid is a hydroxy fatty acid that is stearic acid bearing a hydroxy substituent at position 12. It has a role as a plant metabolite and a bacterial xenobiotic metabolite. It is a hydroxyoctadecanoic acid and a secondary alcohol. It is a conjugate acid of a 12-hydroxyoctadecanoate.
Synthesis
Castor oil is hydrogenated at 5MPa and 185°C in the presence of nickel-aluminum catalyst. The reaction product is obtained by saponification and acid hydrolysis to obtain DL-12-Hydroxystearic acid.
