Enoxaparin

Uses

Enoxaparin is is an anticoagulant used to prevent blood clots in the leg in patients who are on bedrest or who are having hip replacement, knee replacement, or stomach surgery. It is used in combination with aspirin to prevent complications from angina (chest pain) and heart attacks.

Mechanism of action

Enoxaparin is an indirect anticoagulant that binds and potentiates antithrombin III (serine protease inhibitor) through a specific pentasaccharide sequence to form a complex that irreversibly inactivates factor Xa. Following factor Xa inactivation, enoxaparin is released and binds to other anti-thrombin molecules.

Side effects

The more common side effects of enoxaparin can include:
bleeding;
anemia (not having enough healthy red blood cells);
pain and bruising at the site on your skin where you give the injection;
fever;
swelling in your legs.
