Chlorimuron is a post-emergence herbicide that is usually used as the ethyl variant. Little data is available regarding its environmental fate, ecotoxicology or impacts on human health.

ChEBI: Chlorimuron is an N-sulfonylurea that is urea in which one of the nitrogens has been substituted by a (2-carboxyphenyl)sulfonyl group, while the other has been substituted by a 4-chloro-6-methoxypyrimidin-2-yl group. An acetolactate synthase inhibitor, it is used (generally as the corresponding ethyl ester) as a herbicide. It has a role as a herbicide and an EC 2.2.1.6 (acetolactate synthase) inhibitor. It is a member of benzoic acids, a N-sulfonylurea, a member of pyrimidines, an organochlorine pesticide, an aromatic ether and a sulfamoylbenzoate.

Chlorimuron is usually prepared as the ethyl ester and its commercial follows the route typical of sulfonylurea herbicides, assembling a heterocyclic sulfonyl chloride and then coupling it to a urea derived ethyl ester. Industrial routes typically begin with preparation of the chloro substituted pyrimidinyl sulfonyl chloride, generated through controlled chlorosulfonation of the corresponding heterocycle. This activated intermediate is then reacted with an ethyl protected aminocarbonyl precursor to form the sulfonylurea bridge under mild, anhydrous conditions that limit decomposition of the sensitive urea moiety. Final purification removes unreacted heterocycle and low level sulfonamide by products, yielding technical grade chlorimuron ethyl suitable for formulation.
