Pine tar is one of the main products of the pine root pyrolysis industry. The pyrolysis of pine roots yields three types of products: solid, liquid and gaseous. Pine tar is part of the liquid pyrolysis products; it is produced by mixing heavy tar and light tar—both obtained from the distillation of the crude oil derived from the pyrolysis of pine roots—in specific proportions. 
Pine tar is commonly used as a wood preservative; it is also a traditional medicinal remedy used in dermatology for the treatment of wounds and infections.

Pine tar is a dark brown to black viscous liquid or semi-solid with a relative density of 1.01–1.06 and a boiling range of 240–400 °C. It is soluble in diethyl ether, ethanol, glacial acetic acid, chloroform, sodium hydroxide solution and essential oils, and slightly soluble in water. It must not be exposed to direct sunlight to prevent explosion. Take care to keep it away from water. Its main constituents are phenol, cresol, methylcresol, o-ethylphenol, guaiacol, turpentine and pine resin, among others, and it is produced by the dry distillation of pine wood. It is used as a wood preservative and rubber plasticiser, and is also employed in the manufacture of oil-impregnated felt, paints and plastics.

Pine tar is a topical antieczematic and rubefacient.

1. Adhesives: Pine tar can be used as an adhesive in rubber products, for bonding rubber to rubber, rubber to metal, rubber to fabric and other materials. Pine tar adhesives possess high bonding strength and heat resistance, and are widely used in rubber products.
2. Plasticisers: Pine tar can be used as a plasticiser in rubber products to improve the rubber’s flexibility and plasticity. Pine tar plasticisers provide effective plasticising properties whilst having minimal impact on the physical and mechanical properties of rubber, and are widely used in rubber products. 
3. Water-repellent agents: Pine tar can be used as a water-repellent agent in rubber products to enhance the rubber’s water repellency and water resistance. Pine tar water-repellent agents provide effective water repellency whilst having minimal impact on the physical and mechanical properties of rubber, and are widely used in rubber products.

PINE TAR is a product obtained from the destructive distillation of the wood of Pinus, Pinaceae.
