Synthesis
The general procedure for the synthesis of 3-methoxy-5-(methoxycarbonyl)benzoic acid from dimethyl 5-methoxyisophthalate was as follows: dimethyl 5-methoxyisophthalate (5 g, 22.3 mmol) and sodium hydroxide (0.892 g, 22.3 mmol) were dissolved in 50 ml of methanol and the reaction was carried out at reflux at 80 °C overnight. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and the solvent was removed by rotary evaporator. The resulting solid was acidified with hydrochloric acid, the precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried under vacuum to afford monomethyl 5-methoxyisophthalate as a white solid (4.0 g, 85% yield).
