Bis(vinylsulfonyl)methane (BVSM) can be used for:
(1) Medical gelatin scaffolds: as a cross-linking agent for biomacromolecules such as gelatin and proteins, to prevent the scaffold from degrading too rapidly within the body.
(2) Photographic materials: as a hardener for gelatin layers in the photographic film industry;
(3) Textile materials: for the modification of cellulose fibres, to enhance the crease resistance of fabrics or as a dye fixative.

Bis(vinylsulfonyl)methane (BVSM) is a novel bifunctional cross-linking agent. It forms covalent C–N bonds with amine groups and has been widely used for the cross-linking (hardening) of gelatin. The hardening properties of these compounds are attributed to their propensity to undergo di-Michael addition reactions with nucleophilic groups in water-permeable, colloid-forming natural or synthetic polymers[1].
