Chemical Properties
Golden yellow needle-shaped crystals. Melting point: 226.5°C. Insoluble in water, slightly soluble in methanol, ethanol, ether, and hydrocarbons, freely soluble in chloroform, benzene, xylene, and nitrobenzene. Stable in alkaline media. In hydrochloric acid solutions with a concentration greater than 15%, it forms the hydrochloride salt, but hydrolyzes to 5-oxophene in dilute acid or water. Chemically stable.
Uses
Phenazine oxide (Phenazine N-oxide) is a novel and potent fungicide, bactericide, and wood preservative[1].
Safety Profile
Moderately toxic by intraperitoneal route. Experimental teratogenic and reproductive effects. Mutation data reported. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of NOx.
